8 Ingestible Beauty Brands Helping You Nourish Your Skin From Within

Bye, Bye Topical Beauty Products

While natural beauty and wellness brands may not be looking to discontinue topical skincare lines anytime soon, a shift is happening in the industry. "You are what you eat" is how the famous saying goes, and this couldn't be more true than for our hair, nails, and skin health.

"…Your skin is a mirror to your gut," RMS founder Rose-Marie Swift explained in a Free People blog interview earlier this year. "Skincare isn't giving you pimples; your gut is giving you pimples."

This is why we are seeing so many beauty and wellness brands release supplements, vitamins, powders, and ingestibles for skin health. These products combat external concerns (acne, aging, and depleting collagen levels, to name a few) and promote overall wellness. By swapping your morning face wash for an all natural, plant-based elixir, experts claim you can obtain glowing skin while also regulating your gut bacteria, improving your digestion, and feeling more energized.

Cultivating Beauty from Within

Health and wellness should start with eating whole foods, drinking water, exercising and resting your body, and practicing mindfulness and meditation. But [herbs] and supplements can help, especially when it comes to skincare.

It goes without saying, health and wellness should start with eating whole foods, drinking water, exercising and resting your body, and practicing mindfulness and meditation. But adaptogens (nontoxic herbs) and supplements can help, especially when it comes to skincare. In a Well + Good interview, herbalist and Vie Healing founder Mona Dan says, “There is a whole realm of dermatology we take care of with just ingestibles.”

Organic, all natural supplements work like superfoods, except all the powerful vitamins and nutrients are packed into a tiny capsule or tablespoon of powder. When taken regularly, many people find they can achieve clear and hydrated skin that’s smoother and more supple. Depending on the supplement, other benefits include healthy digestion, blissful sleep, reduced stress, and mental clarity.

Understanding Ingestibles: Ingredients + Labels

When shopping for an ingestible skincare product, start with the basics. Is the product natural and organic? Do you understand the ingredients on the label? It’s a good sign when the product has few ingredients, all of which are plant-derived and organic.

Take Dope’s Atomic Beauty powder, for example. The company uses four organic ingredients: Fulvic Acid Powder (a natural mineral to aid digestion), Watermelon Seed Powder, Sunflower Seed Powder, and Coconut Milk Powder; the benefits of each are listed on the product page.

If you aren’t sure what an ingredient is, Google is always a helpful friend. While writing this article, we weren’t familiar with the Rice Bran Solubles in Moon Juice’s Beauty Shroom Vegan Collagen Protection. By doing a quick Google Scholar search for academic and science-based sources, we learned this ingredient is abundant in Vitamin B and tocopherols (vitamin E for skin). Like researching brands and beauty products, digging can take time and effort, but it’s always worth it to know what you’re putting into your body.

A truly transparent and safe brand will respond to your questions about ingredients, production, testing of products, and any other concerns you may have.

Another thing we like to see when shopping for any product is transparency between the company and its customers. We look for this by visiting the About page, reading company ethics and FAQs, and checking out a brand’s social media and customer reviews. And if you have questions about a product, reach out. A truly transparent and safe brand will respond to your questions about ingredients, production, testing of products, and any other concerns.

To help get you started, here are eight of our favorite skincare ingestible brands focusing on organic, all natural ingredients and product transparency.

1. RMS Beauty

Features | Vegan, gluten-free, GMO-free, made in the USA
Price | $64/bottle (discounts available for bulk orders)

Rose-Marie Swift, the founder of RMS Beauty, believes in taking an alternative approach to healthy skin care: she is honing in on gut health. Rather than focusing solely on clean and organic topical products (RMS has many), the brand is also promoting healthy digestion through its supplement line, RMS Beauty Within. With two ingestible products, the Probiotic + Prebiotic and the Women’s Digestive Enzyme, RMS believes healthy and clear skin is achieved by first taking care of our gut and digestive tracks.
